Unloading petrol from road tankers

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. Approved Code of Practice and Guidance.

Overview

This ACOP gives practical guidance on regulation 6 of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002, on the safe unloading of petrol from road tankers. It also gives guidance on regulation 13 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 about the prevention of falls from road tankers unloading petrol at filling stations. It has been drawn up in consultation with the Petrol Working Group of HSC's Advisory Committee on Dangerous Substances (ACDS), which includes representatives of the industry, including oil companies, supermarkets and independent petrol retailers, local government organisations, including the petrol enforcement authorities and technical experts from HSE. The ACOP and guidance aim to prevent a fire through preventing the overfilling of the storage tank; control sources of ignition during unloading and dealing with any spillages that may occur during the unloading of a petrol tanker; and prevent falls from petrol tankers. Contents: Notice of approval; Introduction; Tanker unloading: general duty; Responsiblities of the road tanker operator; Responsibilities of the site operator; Responsiblities of the tanker driver; Additional requirements for pumped deliveries; Prevention of falls; Appendix 1 Extracts from relevant regulations; Appendix 2 Petroleum delivery form; References and further reading
