Research undertaken by HSE has demonstrated the usefulness of urine monitoring when assessing exposures to chromium and nickel in the surface engineering industry. The research showed that with good control in the workplace that it is possible to achieve lower exposures in workers.
There is a Biological Monitoring Guidance Value for chromium of 10 µmol/mol creatinine. HSE has recently reissued EH60 on nickel, reporting that with good control exposures can be reduced to a urine level of 24 µmol/mol creatinine.
