T&M MEK (urine)

Author
Health and Safety Executive
Full Description

Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, 2-butanone, butan-2-one) is used as a solvent for protective coatings and adhesives. Biological monitoring is based on the analysis of MEK in urine samples collected at the end of exposure or end of shift.

There are US and German guidance values to aid interpretation.

As MEK is a volatile solvent, please ensure that the sample bottle is filled to the shoulder (but not more) to ensure no losses during transport and storage. As MEK itself is measured, please ensure that contamination of the sample is avoided (ask workers to remove overalls, wash hands before providing a sample).
