T&M Xylene (urine)

Author
Health and Safety Executive
Full Description

Absorption of xylene is mainly by inhalation of vapour but significant skin absorption may occur. Approximately 95% of the solvent is rapidly metabolised to methylbenzoic acid, which conjugates with glycine to form the corresponding methylhippuric acid, which is excreted in the urine. Urine samples (25 ml) should be collected at the end of shift.

There is an HSE Biological Monitoring Guidance Value of 650 mmol methylhippuric acid /mol creatinine, based on exposure to 50 ppm (8h-TWA) at rest.
